Woman who racked up Rs 6 lakh bill at Delhi luxury hotel had Rs 41 in bank

The woman used fake identity card and fraudulent transactions to cheat the hotel of Rs 6 lakh. She had only Rs 41 in her bank account, the police found during investigation.

An Andhra Pradesh woman recently stayed at a posh hotel in Delhi’s Aerocity for around 15 days. Her total bill during her stay at Pullman Hotel ran up to around Rs 6 lakh, of which over Rs 2 lakh was spent on availing spa services. The woman, who was arrested for cheating the hotel, had only Rs 41 in her bank account, according to the police.

The woman, identified as Jhansi Rani Samuel, had booked the hotel on December 13 for 15 days. According to the hotel staff, Samuel showed a fake identity card of one Isha Dave to avail services worth Rs 2.11 lakh at the spa facility.

Samuel reportedly showed the hotel staff that she was making transactions on the ICICI Bank UPI app. However, the hotel soon discovered that they had not received any payment for the transactions.

“It is suspected that the app she used was dubious,” a police official was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

Samuel was arrested by the Delhi Police on January 13.

During the investigation, the police discovered that the woman had only Rs 41 in her bank account. Samuel told the police that she was a doctor, and her husband, a doctor as well, lived in New York. The police are yet to confirm Samuel’s identity.

This is not the first time a luxury hotel in Delhi has fallen prey to such fraud. Last year, a man had duped a 5-star hotel of Rs 23 lakh and stole silverware and a mother-of-pearl tray from the room.

The man had pretended to be an employee of the Abu Dhabi Royal family and stayed at the Leela Palace hotel in Delhi for over four months. He had told the hotel staff that he was in India for some official work. He had racked up a bill of Rs 35 lakh during his stay, and fled without paying Rs 23 lakh of the total amount.
