It’s the day 12 of the Paris Olympics 0lympics 2024 and what could turn out to be one of the most thrilling and important day for the Indian contingent. India’s Vinesh Phogat has already scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman to reach the final of a wrestling event at the Olympic Games. India’s weight-lifting sensation Mirabai Chanu will also take the centre stage today. After Vinesh Phogat, another Indian wrestler who could bring joy to the Indians with her performance could be Antim Panghal, as the Olympic debutant will take part in the round of 16 clash.
The day will be action packed with not just the wrestlers and weight-lifters, the women’s table tennis team featuring Manika Batra, Sreeja Akula and Archana Girish Kamath will face Germany in the quarter-final clash. India’s golf star Aditi Ashok will also be in action in the round 1 of individual strokeplay. Avinash Sable will also take part in the final of the 3000m steeplechase.
History beacons Vinesh Phogat as she will be in action in the final of the 50kg freestyle at the Paris Olympics 2024. Phogat will take on USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt to clinch a gold in the wrestling event. The Indian entered the competition unseeded made it to the final on the back of three stellar wins on August 6. The 29-year-old also defeated top seed and gold medal winner of Tokyo 2020 Yui Susaki of Japan in her opening round. Vinesh got the better of former European champion Oksana Livach of Ukraine in the quarter-finals and reigning Pan American Games champion Yusneylis Guzman of Cuba in the semis. Phogat has the chance to become the first Indian wrestler and first Indian woman to win a gold in the Olympics if she beats the 6th seeded Sarah.
India’s Mirabai Chanu will return to the fold to compete in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event at the Paris Olympics 2024. The silver medallist at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 will aim to create history as she sets eye on her second Olympic medal. She secured the only quota for India in weightlifting for Paris 2024. She confirmed her place after finishing third in Group B at the IWF World Cup 2024 in Phuket.
The Indian women’s table tennis team featuring Manika Batra, Sreeja Akula and Archana Kamath will take on Germany in the quarter-finals. Manika Batra led the charge as the Indian team stunned Romania 3-2 in the round of 16. In the thrilling round of 16 match, Manika did not drop a single game and was crucial in India’s win. The Indian women’s trio will be aiming to book their semi-final berth today.
