JNU students’ union is protesting in support of activist Afreen Fatima, the daughter of Mohammad Javed who was named as the main accused in the Prayagraj protests.
A protest is underway in Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University in support of activist Afreen Fatima, the daughter of Mohammad Javed. The students’ union is protesting against the ‘bulldozer’ action taken against Fatima’s father.
On June 11, Afreen Fatima put out an appeal on social media, writing to the National Commission of Women highlighting safety concerns regarding her father.
But according to UP Police, Javed allegedly masterminded the Prayagraj protests amid Prophet remarks row on Friday.
On Sunday, bulldozers rolled down the streets of Prayagraj under heavy police protection and demolished the home of accused Javed. First, a bulldozer crew razed the gates and outer walls of Javed’s home. By evening, the house was totally demolished.
According to Javed’s daughter Sumaiya, the house that was razed was gifted to their mother by maternal grandfather. Neither the land nor the house was built by her father, she claimed.
“When the violence took place on Friday, my father came straight home after namaz. He refused to join any kind of violent demonstration,” she stated, denying Javed’s role in the Friday protests.
Earlier in the day, Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor came in support of Fatima, who had alleged illegal detention of her family members by the UP Police.

The police have arrested 316 people from nine districts in connection with Friday’s protests and violence that broke out over BJP spokespersons’ remarks on Prophet Muhammad during a TV debate.
