The temperature marked a sharp decline of 3 degrees over the past 24 hours. At Palam, the minimum temperature was slightly higher at 6.2 degrees Celsius, a marginal dip of 0.2 degrees.
Sunday’s chilly conditions follow what was the coldest morning of the season recorded on Thursday, December 12, when the minimum temperature plummeted to 4.5 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung, four notches below normal.
The capital’s residents have been shivering since, with Safdarjung observing 4.9 degrees Celsius on Wednesday as well.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier predicted a sharp dip in temperatures across Delhi by Thursday, citing the onset of a cold wave that is also expected to grip the northern states of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.
According to the IMD, a cold wave is officially declared in the plains when the minimum temperature falls to 4 degrees Celsius or below, or when it registers a drop of 4.5 to 6.4 degrees from normal. With temperatures hovering around these thresholds, the capital has seen biting cold mornings, forcing residents to bundle up against the chill.
However, the air quality in the national capital remained in the ‘poor’ category. The AQI was measured at 246 at 7 am in Delhi. It was recorded at 212 on Saturday at the same time.
In Anand Vihar, Alipur, Bawana and Burari Crossing, the AQI was 292, 256, 298 and 288, respectively.
